About the book: In this widely acclaimed book David Shapiro considers four kinds of character psychopathology: obsessive-compulsive; paranoid; hysterical; and passive-impulsive. He shows that the diverse symptoms of these conditions are expressions of general ways of thinking, modes of activity, and qualities of subjective experience styles that characterize each of them. He shows that symptoms and the defense mechanisms associated with them are in character.
About the author: David Shapiro is currently Professor of Psychology and Director of Clinical Training at New School University in New York City. He began writing Neurotic Styles while working as Chief Psychologist at the Austen Riggs Center in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Dr. Shapiro is the author of four books: Neurotic Styles; Autonomy and Rigid Character; Psychotherapy of Neurotic Character; and Dynamics of Character: Self-regulation in Psychopathology.

About the Classic Works in Human Behavior Audio Series: The series presents some classic texts on human behavior in audio format. When producing an audio book, we are mindful of the fact that not every good book makes for a good listening experience. Some books use language that is too complicated for audio, others are too theoretical. We only choose books that, in our opinion, are a pleasure to listen to in audio. We chose the audio format for the series to make it easy for the busy professional to continuously learn and stay updated - at home, work, in the car, while exercising, etc. This series is part of our effort to create an audio library of the most important works in the areas of psychiatry and psychology.
